Some people believe that genetic engineering is something to be feared or something to be left well enough alone. “A recent Time/CNN poll found that 90 percent of Americans opposed human cloning and that 92 percent were against creating ‘genetically superior human beings’” (last name para #). These numbers are incredibly high but they do not reflect on genetic engineering as a whole, but rather only one pixel of the bigger picture. This leads me to believe that people are simply misinformed. I would have to disagree with these people. If we can find a way to cure genetic disorders that plague our world of today then I do not see why we should not be all for this and supporting it fully. But I do not think most people are thinking this way when the idea of genetic engineering is brought to their attention. I know that the first time I heard of it, I thought about cloning. And of course all the science fiction movies I have seen made me wary about the continuation of this research. But I did some research and looked into what it was really all about, and I found so much more than just cloning or the ability to create supernatural humans that can live forever or have unnatural powers. And I would have to share the fear of creating such a human race, but this fear is miniscule compared to the benefits we would be reaping from the cures to diseases to having a brighter generation of youth.
