For this blog post, I watched Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “The Enemy.” There are a few things to take note of in this episode. The first one is about the depth of technology represented. The second is about cooperation and decision making. To continue on the representation of technology, one of the most interesting pieces would be Geordi La Forge’s eyewear. Geordi was born blind yet with the advanced technology seen in the episode, he can see with his visor that uses radiation to create a picture similar to eyesight. It would be incredible for us to advance to such technology and I do not think it is out of our reach. Nowadays, people with defective or limited hearing can get transplants to enable better hearing. The fact that we have that now gives me hope for the future and what science will bring us.
The second aspect of the episode I wanted to take note of was the cooperation and/or lack thereof between enemies. While Geordi was able to work with the Romulan to get off of the treacherous plant, Worf was not able to cast aside his feelings of hatred from past misgivings. In the world of today, it is still hard for some people to put aside their differences and cooperate with someone, even if a life is at stake. Although some people are getting better at this, there are still others who refuse to give up the past and let it affect their future. In my opinion this is ridiculous because the past and even the future are equally unchangeable. The only thing that truly matters is the present, or the now, where decisions are made and actions are carried out.
