Blog 23: One thing only I know... and that is that I know nothing.

For my research paper, I am actually using 2 scenes.  Both scenes are from “The Schizoid Man” from Star Trek: The Next Generation and have significance to my paper.  The first scene is arguing that saving yourself from death is possible.  Although the writers portray it in a slightly different way than what we are headed towards today, the impact is still intense.  With the use of genetic engineering, we will one day be able to cure cancer, dispel genetic disorders, and expand life expectancy rates.  It could even be possible to one day stop death in its tracks.  The first scene is in full support of genetic engineering and the possibilities surrounding it.  For the second scene I use, its argument surrounds the moral aspect of genetic modification.  In the scene, Picard talks to Dr. Graves and asks him to look at what his “immortality” is doing to his loved ones.  They are by no means happy with his progression and in fact one could say they are weary, tentative, and slightly disturbed by it.  So, the big question surround genetic engineering is not “Is it possible?” but rather “Is it the right thing to do?” And in my opinion I think it is important to continue research to cure diseases and disorders, but even more important to not continue as far as reaching immortality.  People worry about doctors and laboratory researchers playing God and changing too many things around.  But, honestly would all of it be bad?  Everyone has lost a loved one who could have lived a lot longer if there was a cure for cancer, or disease, or disorder.  So why not progress and find those cures now and save others from losing the people they love?  The argument and my support behind it seems clear.
