For this blog, I shall try and explain what it is about my episode that allows me to see my real world example in a different light. As you probably already know, my real world example is genetic engineering. Genetic engineering has become “famous” for its two different areas of research, cloning and gene modification. The episode showed me something in genetic engineering that I had never really considered before though. Could gene modification and cloning together be used to create a sort of immortality possibility? In the episode, Dr. Graves learns he is suffering from a fatal disease and only has a few short weeks to live. In the end, the audience learns that Dr. Graves has invented some technology that allowed him to transfer his conscious thought into the android Data, and therefore giving himself the opportunity to be immortal. Although it is not quite the same as using genetic engineering, the thought has nonetheless been placed into your mind. And after some time you think, well maybe genetic engineering can be that bridge to immortality. People try so hard to leave some kind of legacy behind after they die. The ancient Egyptians built pyramids for their rulers to be kept in after they transitioned on from the living to the afterlife. There were rumors about Walt Disney freezing himself until such a time came when the potion for immortality had been perfected and he could be unfrozen and live on forever. The quest for immortality is one that all humans share and will always be present and on our minds. To have an episode show us immortality happening was a huge fantasy come true. But the moral that came with it should have had an even greater impact. It is not natural to live on forever, let it be a dream that shall never be met.
