For this blog, I read the commonplace article titled “Why Rap is Going Down, Down, Down, Down, Down” by Sam Rakoczy. To those of you who do not know me, rap is my thing. I listen to it none stop, so when I saw this article, I knew I had to read it. And for the most part I have to agree with the author. Anymore, rap is more about the beats and the bass than the actual lyrics to a song. Listen to Lil Wayne’s song “6 Foot 7 Foot.” The music is so overpowering that there are points when you can’t hear what Lil Wayne is even saying. Don’t get me wrong, I love this song and its beat is awesome, but it isn’t everything. I am a huge fan of Eminem though and most of his current work is just as good as his previous raps, although some of it could be better. Tupac has been very recently introduced to me, and at first I will admit I was not sure if I would enjoy his music. I listened to one song and it was incredible. The meaning behind the words was evident and the beat wasn’t too bad either. So again I agree with the author, hip-hop needs a reform. Something needs to be changed or it may get even worse. There are already YouTube videos out there supporting this claim. Bring back the old rap where the words had meaning, and came from the rapper’s emotions. That is what I would like to see happen.
I agree with you about the idea that rap needs to be reformed and that the words need to have meaning. I feel that today the rap songs have good beats and all, but the words are sometimes just awful. I feel that these words and songs have a huge impact on the youth and even help to cause some of the violence, drug use, gangs, etc.
ReplyDeleteWhy thank you for agreeing, lol. And I agree the impact can be huge! If things changed perhaps the violence rates would decrease.
ReplyDeleteI do agree that most rap now is more about great beats than songs that actually make sense. Lil Wayne is one of the biggest offenders of this. I do like some of his songs, but most are just pure rhyming or using the music to cover his lyrics that don't mean anything. 6 foot 7 foot is a great example of the music being way too overpowering. Also, I think that all genres of music are getting away from meaning and moving towards what's catchy.
ReplyDeleteExactly! Although I really do enjoy Lil Wayne's song 6 Foot 7 Foot, I think i only like it for the beat... I don't even pay attention to the words. Plus it is a sort of remix of the Banana Song from Beetlejuice which I really liked to watch when I was younger.
