So for this next blog post, I continue my search through the Cold War. This time I read an article called “Toward a New Deterrent.” In this article, it talks more about the life after the Cold War, which in all honesty I was not aware of when I started reading it. But as I continued, the article made some interesting points and even talked about the notion of another cold war happening in the future. What would happen if the United States was forced into another Cold War? The United States has not made a nuclear weapon in almost twenty years now. Most of the county’s weapon designs are outdated and unusable. To make matters interesting, even though the United States pretty much stopped altogether on nuclear weapons, other countries around the world continued on with their research and designs. Now, we are behind and it would take at least twenty more years, if we started today, to begin catching up with the rest of the world. At the conclusion of this article, they mention the fact that nuclear weapons cannot be ”uninvented.” It is also said that the ultimate goal where nuclear weapons are all but a thing of the past is unachievable. There will always be nuclear weapons in the world, so the question that should be thrown out there is simple. Should the United States continue to develop and test nuclear weapons to be prepared for something that could happen in the future? Will it come to the point in American society where we no longer wish to cooperate and strike a deal with the enemy but instead just use nuclear weapons to terminate their existence? I hope the answer to this question is a no, but only time will tell us for sure.
I agree another Cold War would not be favorable for our country, but I think we are still militarily way more advanced than any other nation in the world, so I don't think another Cold War is on the horizon anytime soon.
ReplyDeleteI think it's interesting that you consider making a nuclear weapon "catching up to the enemies." I personally feel that nuclear weapons should never have been invented, what's your stance on this?
ReplyDeleteYes I would agree that we are militarily advanced... more so than any other country but having the military is not always the same as having certain weapons. We have not advanced in nuclear weapons, which is a main point in the past cold wars.
ReplyDeleteI agree that nuclear weapons should not have been invented. They have made a devastating effect on our history not as a country but worldwide. But they were invented and now I think it would be foolish to not at the very least keep up with the other countries advancements. I always like to think in the terms of "better safe than sorry."
